Gulu District is experiencing an acute shortage of anti malarial drugs, district Health Officer Dr. Paul Onek has said.
Dr. Onek described the situation as being too serious to the extent that adults and children are sharing doses of medication that have been packaged to treat children.
“There is only one type of treatment for malaria that is remaining in the district for child artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs) or coartem for children,” he said.
Coartem, the anti malarial drug comes in special packages that are designed for adults and children separately because the package that is designed for adults is out of stock in Gulu; they are now digging deep into the children’s package.
Dr Onek warns the children might soon lose out. He however declined to tell this paper how much stock is still left of the children’s package.
He said medicine that is meant to treat 100 children is now being used to treat 25 adults. He said if the trend continues it may lead to treatment failure and emergency of drug resistance.
He said the practice which has now lasted six months follows a directive from the Ministry of health that there is shortage of drugs in the country.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 3.3 billion people, or nearly half of the world's population, live at risk of contracting malaria.
In Africa, malaria kills about a million people every year, most of them children and pregnant mothers. In fact, of all malaria deaths reported by WHO nearly 85 per cent were in children five years of age and under.
In Uganda, malaria is the leading cause of mortality. It is endemic in 95 per cent of the country, and forms 30-50 per cent of the outpatient department attendance, 20 per cent of in-patient admissions, and 9-14 per cent of the deaths of admitted cases.
WHO says Malaria impacts negatively on the impoverished society where an estimated 25 per cent of household income is spent treating the disease.
Government switched to artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs) or coartem as first line treatment of malaria. However, they are expensive. A dose costs sh15, 000 and sh25, 000.
