Uganda launches $600 million peace recovery plan

APA-Kampala (Uganda) With the impending return of peace Uganda has launched a $600 million recovery plan for its war-torn northern region to bring it on equal footing with other regions of the country.

The five-year Peace Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP) is designed to address the challenges of development in the 21 districts including Gulu, Kotido, Masindi, Nebbi, Kiboga, Pader, Kitgum and Lira.

Thirty percent of the total cost of the PRDP has already been committed through ongoing programmes such as the universal primary education, national agriculture advisory services, plan for modernization of agriculture and universal secondary education.

Unlike other earlier initiatives the PRDP will be implemented through a joint monitoring committee chaired by the prime minister and supported by 40 members from sector ministries including Education, Investment, Works, Water and Environment.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to launch the PRDP joint monitoring committee soon.
