New Vision (Kampala)

OVER 1,700 internally displaced people (IDPs) at Wii Lul camp bordering Awach sub-county in Gulu district lack clean water. They walk to Cwero and Wii Aswa which are over 15km away from their camp in search for water because the wells and streams in the area dried up.
The district secretary for works and technical services, Alex Otim, told The New Vision that some displaced people trap rain water and running water in holes.
"The situation is pathetic. You do not see any one washing because there is no water. Others walk from the camp to Gulu town to wash their clothes."
Otim said the residents do not have mosquito nets yet they live in structures which do not have walls, thus exposing them to malaria.
He lamented that the district had failed to locate a suitable place for boreholes because water points dried up when the residents abandoned the place years back.
The camp was created in December last year when old ones were being decongested.
