Former UN Diplomat and Uganda People’s Congress diehard Olara Otunnu on Tuesday wound up his two-day familiarisation tour of the four major districts in the South-western region.

After addressing students of Mbarara University of Science and Technology on Monday, Mr Otunnu headed to Kabale where he brought business to a standstill before he addressed residents, who were predominantly opposition supporters.

Said Mr Otunnu: “I thank you for keeping UPC alive in Kigezi region despite the criticisms from the ruling NRM government. Do not feel intimidated as you demand for a better Electoral Commission that will conduct a free and fair election because the international community shall be behind you.” In Bushenyi, Mr Otunnu said “President Museveni is not God” to be feared and that even if he left power, Uganda will not come to a standstill.

“Museveni has been drumming fear in the hearts of Ugandans for years. We are coming out to tell him that he is not a god and we are on our way to change this government,” Mr Otunnu added.

He said President Museveni tried to lure him to join the NRM party but he refused adding that his 23 years in exile were imposed by the President.

The Kabale municipality mayor also the district FDC party vice chairman, Dr Pius Ruhemurana, and the former health minister in the Obote Two government, Dr Ezra Nkwasibwe, joined the cheerful crowd at Green Hills Hotel and thanked Mr Otunnu for his commitment to cause unity among the different political parties.

They said the strategy would facilitate equal regional development in the country.
“I want to welcome and appreciate the non-violent means Mr Otunnu is using to address Ugandans everywhere he goes. I support inter-party cooperation because it’s the best way to create a new chapter of leadership in Uganda,” Dr Ruhemurana said.

Kabale UPC chairman Paul Karekyera asked the UPC party coordinators at the sub-county and parish levels to intensify mobilisation and recruit more youth and women into the party so as to build its strength ahead of the 2011 general elections.

After visiting Kabale, Mbarara, Rukungiri and Bushenyi, Mr Otunnu was expected in Kasese, Kabarole and Kyenjojo District.
