President Yoweri Museveni has directed the Ministry of Gender to construct palaces for all the 53 traditional chiefs in the Acholi sub-region to enable them expedite the peace recovery process.
The prime minister of Acholi cultural institution, Rwot Kenneth Otinga, in a consultative meeting for the traditional chiefs on Friday confirmed that their kingdom (Ker-Kwaro) has already received the presidential directive now awaiting implementation.
“We have already received the letter that the President wrote to have the palaces built for all the cultural chiefs in Acholi sub-region as people return to their homes from the camps,” Rwot Otinga said.
He, however, said the biggest problem was locating plots of land where the palaces would be constructed in some of the chiefdoms.
“I’m appealing to you to start planning now where the residential palaces will be built,” Rwot Otinga told his subjects.
He explained that when constructed, the palaces would give space to the leaders to meet their communities and understand their problems.
The President had earlier pledged to support the traditional chiefs in the sub-region with iron sheets to facilitate resettlement.
Under the government’s plan to resettle IDPs in Acholi and Lango sub regions, each household is to get 30 iron sheets upon completion of a wall structure.
Most chiefs in Acholi have been living in IDP camps together with their subjects during the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency and many are still holding back in the camps due to lack of facilitation to return to their traditional areas of jurisdiction.
Three years ago, the President supported the office of the Paramount Chief of Acholi with a double cabin vehicle to facilitate his transport in running the affairs of his kingdom.| < Prev | Next > |
