January 20th, 2009 was a historic day, a day on which Barack Hussein Obama became the first African American President of the United States of America. Friends for Peace in Africa warmly congratulates him on this incredible achievement.

FPA greatly appreciates President Obama’s strong message delivered in the inaugural speech in which he said, “To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.” Such a message marks a departure from the old administration which lavished praise on such leaders and it is long overdue.

FPA also appreciates the message when the President said, “To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to the suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect.”

However, we recognize and agree with the President that, “the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time," and we affirm the sincerity of President Obama when he said; "they will be met."

These are wonderful messages which are encouraging to our efforts to bring peace in Africa. We await with hope their implementation. Meanwhile we most heartily wish President Obama much success.
