Kampala - THE Government has started a cadre training programme to revamp leadership in northern Uganda.
Last Monday, 455 candidates who had undergone three weeks of training were passed out at Christ the King Primary Teacher's College in Gulu.
While officiating at the function, the state minister for primary health care, Emmanuel Otaala, said the training was aimed at making leaders embrace government programmes that are geared towards the rehabilitation of the region.
"Cadre training is important because it opens the minds of leaders to do what is good for their people. We want to reawaken the politics of northern Uganda," he said.
"We must teach people to speak the language of patriotism, love and unity. We are doing this through cadre trainings," Otaala said.
He said the Government understood the plight of the poor and started programmes like universal primary and secondary education.
Otaala urged the people of Acholi to work with the Government to cause positive change in the area.
He assured the people of Acholi that peace would be maintained because the army had gained capacity to defend its people.
Gulu resident district commissioner Walter Ochora said the cadres training was not a method of recruitment for the NRM party.
He said it was a method of brightening the minds of trainees to make them know how to implement Government programmes.
Ochora also called upon all the mayors in the north to undergo cadre training. "I will organise cadre training for mayors in northern Uganda because they have become so erratic," He said.
"They should change their focus to developmental issues instead of crititcising government programmes," Ochora added.
