E-mail Print PDF
LIRA district authorities have quarantined cattle movement and restricted the sale of meat and milk following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease writes Patrick Okino

The district veterinary officer, Dr Wilson Okwir, said over 60 head of cattle had been infected but death had not been reported yet. He said Amach Sub-County in Lira municipality and Otuke County were the affected areas.

We detected the problem in October and we sensitised farmers about the disease , Okwir said. The disease had also been reported in Apac, Amolatar, Amuru, Kaberimaido, Abim and Pader districts.

He added that the agriculture ministry had been asked to provide vaccines for the animals.

District Police commander Raymond Otim said they would impound animals being transported without clearance from the veterinary department.
