THE army and Police have launched a joint operation against thugs who have been terrorising the people of Lira, Pader and Kitgum districts.

The criminals are notorious for stealing solar panels and trafficking arms.

So far one ammunition trafficker, Augustine Okot has been arrested.

He was caught in possession of sub machine gun ammunition which he was allegedly selling at Sh90,000 per magazine.

He is being detained at the army's 5th Division headquarters at Achol-Pii for possible court martial after investigations are completed.

A press release signed by the UPDF 5th division public relations officer, Capt. Deo Akiiki last Wednesday said: A hunt for criminals by the Police and the army in Pader yielded fruits. Three thugs who have been stealing solar panels in Kitgum, Pader and Lira were netted. Bonny Okello, 27, an employee of Club 24 Seven, David Ojuma, 23 and Tom Aguma Tom 22 were netted with seven solar panels.

He said: the thugs were captured at Puranga trading centre while trying to smuggle the panels to Lira. There was an exchange of fire as one of the thugs tried to escape but he was later captured.

It is believed that those captured are part of an armed racket of thugs who have been robbing people along the roads.

We shall continue to jointly hunt down these criminals who distract the minds of already traumatised returnees until the north is totally peaceful,Akiiki said.

He advised the public to be vigilant and report any threats to the Police or the army.
