Although the Uganda People’s Defense Forces withdrew from the Democratic Republic of Congo where it has been pursuing LRA rebels, a section of the UPDF is still in DRC.

The Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima has revealed that the intelligence arm of Operation Lightening Thunder are still in the DRC.

He says that UPDF forces are providing military intelligence to the DRC army who took over the search for the remaining LRA when UPDF withdrew its forces.

While giving an accountability of the operation, Gen. Aronda said the Operation which begun on December 14th left twelve soldiers dead, and nineteen wounded.

Aronda says the UPDF will continue to share intelligence information with FARDC as it continues the subsequent operations against the LRA in what he calls a second phase of the operation that begun on March 21st.

The UPDF chief says the Uganda army made several achievements against the LRA , including the rescue of195 abductees, recovery of 86 rifles, capturing of 14 LRA, killing 98 LRA rebels, disrupting LRA communications, crippling LRA’s logistics and achieving regional unity against the LRA.
