For the last 23 years our northern counterparts have gotten displaced, raped, abducted, chopped and cooked in pots as the rest are forced to eat dead bodies of their relatives at funerals by the gunmen.
To my dismay, when UPDF attacks Joseph Kony’s rebels, all we hear is: “Kony has escaped narrowly.” Let me just begin from ‘Operation Iron Fist’ of Brig. James Kazini, the then operations field commander, he said Kony would be a walkover. He even made pledges to Ugandans of how Kony would be finished in a few months. Now it’s many years after and Kony is still alive and deadly.
Whenever the UPDF attacked, it would hit empty hideouts and only capture basins, flasks, Kanzu tunics, Kaunda suits, guitars, and jungle boots like it is with this ‘Operation Lightning Thunder’ headed by afande Patrick Kankiriho, Moses Rwakitarate and Muhoozi Keinerugaba. Every Ugandan is suffering because if one part of the body pains, definitely the whole body feels the impact.
The recent joint attack on Galamba’s rebel base was not a properly executed mission. I think that Keinerugaba is just trying to prove his military prowess. The pictorial in the press showed that these were posed pictures rather than action photos. Therefore Ugandans have no reason to celebrate the end of war in the northern region.
“With the peace negotiations, the doors are open for Kony and we are ready to withdraw these ICC arrest warrants against him,” Ndugu Ruhakana Rugunda told the press in a briefing recently. But UPDF spokesman Maj. Paddy Ankunda countered: “We shall twist his neck…”
According to Ruth Nankabirwa, the State Minister for Defence, this is the language the LRA leader can understand. “We have given him a lot of liberty, but now we decided to use his own language, the language he listens,” Nankabirwa said.
It is quite a pity that while Ugandans are in a happy Christmas mood, in the north it will be a different image if Kony answers back in his ‘language.’
Of course it is not a Christmas gift from NRM government to people in the north as MP Nusula Tiperu put it on a radio talk show. For God and my country.
