Acholi Parliamentary Group Press Release on Land

E-mail Print PDF

APG Press Release

Acholi Parliamentary Group (APG) notes with dismay an article which appears on page 3 of the New Vision today, 21st December 2007.

APG would like to state as follows:

1. That its position on Acholi land was clearly articulated on the floor of Parliament on 14th December 2006.

2. As far as the request for land, 40,000 ha, by the Madhvani Group in Amuru is concerned, a joint meeting was held under the Chairmanship of the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister on 18th December 2007 and the position agreed was made public in a press release that day.  The main decision reached was that any investor, Madhvani inclusive, must first wait for our people to return and settle in their original homes.

3. The following day, 19th December 2007, President held a meeting with Acholi people in Gulu Barracks on the same issue.  Seven (7) members of APG attended this meeting.  Again, no agreement was reached to give land to the Madhvani Group.  The final position taken at the end of the meeting was that the people of Acholi should be left alone to sort out their land problems, in their own conference, before the question of large investments in rural land can be discussed.

4. Yesterday, 20th December 2007, President Museveni went for a rally in Amuru, where, we have learned, he spoke alone without a single response or comment from anybody else.

5. Finally, we wish to state that there are procedures for acquiring land in this country.  The media is not one of these procedures.

Hon. Okello-Okello

Chairman – Acholi Parliamentary Group
