U.S. War on Terror Expands in East Africa

While the U.S. Congress can't agree on providing healthcare to its citizens, the deployment of U.S. soldiers in Africa is stepping up speed, as Senator Russ Feingold, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, pushes a bill forward which calls for the use of military force in apprehending the Lord's Resistance Army.

After decades of life in overcrowded, disease-ridden camps, Ugandans return home to rebuild, without the help of the Ugandan government, which has finally admitted the policy of forced displacement, responsible for the deaths of thousands of men, women and especially children, was planned. New admissions of an intentional policy of forced displacement by Ugandan government officials has brought the issue back into focus. The Ugandan government's war strategy of crowding two million northern Ugandans into temporary camps  resulted in mass deaths from preventable, and treatable diseases.

A month ago was first day of April, often called April Fool’s Day, when people so inclined play practical jokes – one would hope mostly innocent ones.

But something that may not be intended as a joke, and is certainly not innocent, is another lamentable milestone in the history of the government’s current showpiece initiative to assist the recovery of war-affected northern Uganda: the Peace, Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP).

Acholi Religous Leaders Peace Initiative on US Bill

The response of religious leaders in Northern Uganda to recent US legislation currently under review in the US Congress which calls for military action against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Congo. The bill was drafted by former champions of Northern Uganda: Senators Sam Brownback and Russ Feingold. The two senators have reversed positions and begun to advocate for a military solution to the war.

At the onset of the ongoing mission against the LRA ("Operation Lightning Thunder") leaders from Northern Uganda who spoke out against the military attacks were threatened with arrest.

WHEN the guns fell silent in northern Uganda, we told our people to leave the IDP camps. After being concentrated in these squalid conditions for over a decade, going home was the best peace dividend. We told them to open their land and cultivate for their own consumption and for the market. Everyone was excited. No more lining up to face the indignity of receiving rations of food from relief organisations.
